ASPI hits a record breaking 16,000

The Colombo Bourse reached a new milestone, surpassing the 16,000 mark and closed the trading session at 16,349, gaining 404 points and marking a 2.53% increase from the previous day.





During today's trading session, most of the investor attention was focused on Blue-chip stocks and Banking sector shares. Additionally, JKH, BIL, SAMP, SPEN and LOLC emerged as the top positive contributors to the index.



Amidst multiple off-board transactions and increased participation from retail investors, turnover surged to nearly an 11-month high, reaching LKR 12.9Bn, marking a 107% increase compared to the monthly average. 





Moreover, the Banking sector led the turnover by 27%, followed by the Capital Goods and Food, Beverage and Tobacco sectors jointly contributing 43% of the overall turnover. Meanwhile, the net foreign inflow for the day stood at LKR 88.6Mn. 



Activities in the bond market open on a mixed note for 2025



Opening the 2nd trading day for the year, the secondary bond market saw a mixed interest today, resulting in a shift in the yield curve. Mid tenors attracted interest during the day as trades were seen among 2027, 2030 and 2031 bonds.



Accordingly, 15.09.2027, 15.10.2027 and 15.12.2027 registered trades between 9.75%-9.85%. Moreover, 15.05.2030 closed transactions at 11.02% and 15.10.2030 hovered between 11.08%-11.15% during the day.



Also, 01.12.2031 closed trades at 11.30%. On the external side, LKR depreciated against the greenback for the 2nd consecutive day, closing at LKR 293.4/USD compared to previous day’s closing of LKR 293.0/USD.



Similarly, the rupee depreciated against other major currencies including the GBP, EUR, AUD and CNY. Meanwhile, during the year 2024, the rupee has appreciated sharply against the USD by 9.7%.



 Meanwhile, the overnight liquidity level remained broadly stable at LKR 149.36Bn compared to yesterday’s level of LKR 149.50Bn. Moreover, CBSL Holdings continued to remain stagnant at LKR 2,515.62Bn during the day.
