Hambantota port draws global liner interest amid shifting trade routes

Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port is seeing renewed interest from major global shipping lines as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to reshape maritime trade routes and logistics planning.

Port operator Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) said it recently hosted senior representatives from CMA CGM and Evergreen Marine Corporation to explore the possibility of introducing container services through Hambantota.

The high-level engagements come at a time when disruptions and security concerns linked to the Middle East are placing strain on traditional East–West shipping routes, prompting global carriers to reassess network configurations and seek alternative hubs.

Strategically located just 10 nautical miles from the main East–West shipping corridor, Hambantota is increasingly being viewed as a potential transshipment and logistics node within the Indian Ocean. Industry analysts note that several carriers are informally evaluating the port’s operational readiness, including turnaround times, yard capacity and handling efficiency, as part of broader contingency planning.

HIPG officials said ongoing investments in infrastructure—particularly expanded container yard capacity and upgraded handling equipment—have strengthened the port’s ability to respond to shifting demand patterns. The port has also demonstrated resilience during recent regional disruptions, including adverse weather conditions.

While no formal service commitments have yet been announced, the level of engagement by leading global shipping lines is seen as a positive indicator of Hambantota’s gradual transition from a bulk and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) focused facility into a more diversified, multi-purpose maritime hub.

The developments underscore a wider structural shift in global shipping, where geopolitical risk, route diversification and port performance are playing an increasingly decisive role in shaping carrier strategies. Analysts say the current environment presents a strategic opportunity for Hambantota to secure new liner services and strengthen its position within the region’s evolving logistics network.
