A pilot project was launched in Sri Lanka's Southern Province on April 22, 2025, aimed at strengthening the region’s role in national export development. The initiative focuses on developing structured, export-oriented action plans at the Divisional Secretariat level.

The program, backed by Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti, involves local officials, Export Development Officers, and representatives from the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB). It seeks to integrate regional resources into export industries and improve coordination and awareness among stakeholders.

Key plans include implementing monitoring mechanisms, setting clear export goals, and fostering grassroots-level collaboration. Minister Handunnetti also held one-on-one discussions with officers to address challenges and align on targets. The government plans to expand this regional model to other provinces in the future.
