The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has expressed deep sorrow over the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, reaffirming its commitment to supporting national recovery efforts as communities grapple with loss and disruption.
In a statement, the Chamber said it mourns the lives lost and stands with the thousands of families displaced or impacted by the cyclone’s severe destruction. It added that, with the support of its membership, the Chamber has been coordinating urgently needed relief through close collaboration with Government agencies.
“The unwavering resilience of Sri Lankans is evident in moments such as these,” the Chamber noted, stressing that the crisis underscores the need for collective action to restore lives, livelihoods, and stability across affected regions.
The Chamber also announced that the upcoming Sri Lanka Economic and Investment Summit, initially intended to drive economic growth and investment, has taken on added significance in light of the disaster. The summit will now serve as a key forum to reflect on the country’s recovery path, discuss strategies for resilience, and strengthen commitment to rebuilding a more stable future.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Chamber said it will proceed with the summit but without any social events. Funds originally earmarked for those activities will be redirected to support ongoing relief efforts.
“Continuing with the summit in this revised format is essential to fostering the collaboration, investment, and policy dialogue needed for an effective and inclusive recovery,” it stated.
The Chamber called on its members, summit participants, and the wider public to join in the national effort, emphasising that adversity can be transformed into an opportunity for renewal and long-term progress.
