A group of 30 Sri Lankan handloom and powerloom craftsmen concluded a week-long specialised training and capacity-building programme in India, aimed at strengthening skills and fostering deeper collaboration between the two countries’ textile sectors.

The delegation, representing both traditional and modern segments of Sri Lanka’s textile industry, visited India from 9–15 November 2025. The initiative follows the announcement made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025, offering 700 customised annual training slots for Sri Lankan professionals.

The programme was organised by the Government of India and conducted at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPISTM) in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Over the course of the week, participants took part in an extensive series of technical and thematic sessions spanning the full textile value chain. Training modules covered weaving techniques, modern design technologies, marketing strategies, and leadership development, with a focus on enhancing practical skills and industry readiness.

In addition to classroom training, the craftsmen undertook study visits to leading textile institutions and industrial facilities. These engagements provided first-hand exposure to advanced production technologies, contemporary design practices, and evolving retail formats within India’s dynamic textile ecosystem.

The programme also offered broader insights into India’s innovation-driven textile landscape and opened avenues for increased knowledge exchange and collaboration between industry stakeholders in both countries.

Officials said the initiative has contributed significantly to strengthening professional competencies within Sri Lanka’s textile sector while deepening institutional linkages and industry cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.
