Sri Lanka’s export sector posted steady growth in the first eight months of 2025, earning US$ 11,554.32 million — a 6.61% increase compared to the same period last year, according to provisional data.

In August alone, total exports of goods and services reached US$ 1,607.58 million, marking a 2.57% year-on-year rise. Merchandise exports grew by 5.13% to US$ 1,294.83 million, while services exports were estimated at US$ 312.75 million.

From January to August 2025, merchandise exports amounted to US$ 9,092.85 million, up 6.89% from 2024, while services exports increased 5.57% to US$ 2,461.46 million. Key service categories included ICT/BPM, construction, financial services, and transport and logistics.

Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe attributed the growth to stronger market access and greater competitiveness.

“This encouraging growth highlights Sri Lanka’s increasing integration into global trade and the success of our continued efforts to strengthen export competitiveness while diversifying market opportunities,” he said.

He added that exporters had shown “remarkable resilience and adaptability” amid global challenges, expressing confidence in achieving the 2025 export target.

The EDB noted that services exports are becoming an increasingly important driver of growth, underscoring the expanding role of Sri Lanka’s knowledge-based economy and its contribution to job creation.
