Visionary investor S P Tao no more

Visionary investor S P Tao, Chairman of Overseas Realty (Ceylon) PLC, the owning company of World Trade Center and Havelock City, Colombo, has passed away at the age of 105 in Nanjing, China.



Tao was the Founder of the Shing Kwan Group in Singapore which is the parent company of Overseas Realty PLC. A naturalized citizen of Singapore of Chinese origin, Tao had extensive worldwide business experience and was widely regarded as a visionary entrepreneur in the commodities, shipping and real estate sectors.



He will be remembered by Sri Lankans as a pioneer investor who took a bold decision to invest in the country in a not so conducive environment amidst growing threats of terrorism and uncertinity.



He was born and raised in China. At the age of 20, the Sino-Japanese war forced him to leave the country. After brief stays in Vietnam and Myanmar, he eventually settled in Singapore where he began his long and illustrious career. Tao considered himself “Chinese in origin and a proud Singaporean.‟
